custom_padding=&#8221;3px||0px|||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Challenging day\u2011trip destinations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Nuolikirkko<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Nuolikirkko is a remote and beautiful destination in Keluj\u00e4rvi, about 30 kilometres from the centre of Sodankyl\u00e4. It is an ancient sacred site and a small hill with a stunning open view from the top. At the foot of the hill there is a widened area where you can park your car. There is no official trail or visitor infrastructure. Move with care: the ascent to the summit is short but rocky and fairly steep. Please respect the tranquillity of this ancient sacred place as you explore the area. If the gravel road leading to the site is in poor condition, driving there is not recommended. <a href=\"https:\/\/retkipaikka.fi\/syrjainen-nuolikirkko-avaa-maiseman-muinaiseen-metsa-lappiin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See the site introduction here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Nuolikuru Nature Trail<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Nuolikuru Nature Trail (<a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7477922.149337476&amp;e=509898.6265706351&amp;title=P-paikka+ja+polun+alku&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=11&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map<\/a>) runs along the slopes of Nuolivaara in Keluj\u00e4rvi, a little over 30 kilometres from Sodankyl\u00e4. At the start of the trail there is a rest spot with fireplaces. The gently rising path leads you on a few\u2011kilometre loop through the rugged wilderness landscapes of old forests. At the top of the hill you\u2019ll find the boundary marker of Sodankyl\u00e4, Pelkosenniemi and Savukoski. Bring a map and be careful: trail markings may be incomplete, and there is no mobile phone coverage in Nuolikuru. If the gravel road leading to the trailhead is in poor condition, driving there is not recommended.<a href=\"https:\/\/retkipaikka.fi\/hiljainen-ja-syrjainen-jattikuru-on-pakopaikka-ihmismaailmasta-iltakavelylla-nuolikurun-luontopolulla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Read more here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Oratunturi<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Oratunturi rises along the Kemij\u00e4rvi road and offers summer and autumn travellers incredible views just a 2\u2011kilometre walk from the parking area (<a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7471828.356622199&amp;e=501832.1881029125&amp;title=P-paikka&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=10&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map<\/a>). The fell is very rocky, so hikers should be sure\u2011footed, unhurried and wearing sturdy footwear. Near the summit there is a lean\u2011to shelter maintained by Mets\u00e4hallitus, also accessible via a snowmobile route. If the gravel road leading from the Kemij\u00e4rvi road to the trailhead is in poor condition, driving there is not recommended. <a href=\"https:\/\/retkipaikka.fi\/lyhyt-ja-loiva-nousu-oratunturille-vie-lapin-taivaan-reunalle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more and see photos here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hirvi\u00e4kuru in Oraj\u00e4rvi<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The route to Hirvi\u00e4kuru in Oraj\u00e4rvi is easy to walk and less than a kilometre long, but being near the edge of the gorge requires extreme caution. The drop is high and vertical, and there are no safety railings. <a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7473227.30691288&amp;e=493960.5403200032&amp;title=P-paikka&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=12&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parking area on the map<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Pyh\u00e4\u2011Nattanen<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Pyh\u00e4\u2011Nattanen is reached via a 7\u2011kilometre loop trail in the Sompio Strict Nature Reserve. Along the route, at the foot of the fell, there is a lean\u2011to shelter and a fireplace. On the summit you\u2019ll find the famous stone tors, the old fire guard\u2019s hut, and unobstructed views in every direction. Note that fires are not permitted at the top. The most direct route to the summit begins <a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7555267.826564385&amp;e=514744.0790574201&amp;title=Reitin+l%C3%A4ht%C3%B6piste&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=11&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. Remember that the area is a strict nature reserve, so you must stay on the marked trail. <a href=\"https:\/\/retkipaikka.fi\/pyha-nattanen-sodankyla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more on Retkipaikka.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span><strong>Sattasvaara<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Sattasvaara is an ancient cone volcano and a truly peculiar sight. A paved road leads to the foot of the hill. Contrary to the signage in the terrain, we recommend ascending via the path that passes through the reindeer fence (<a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7499363.214141581&amp;e=472524.30511842435&amp;title=Helpomman+reitin+l%C3%A4ht%C3%B6piste&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=11&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map<\/a>). The route is marked, and the distance to the summit is about 1.5 kilometres. The climb is steep, so choose sturdy footwear and remember to bring drinking water. The views from the top are unforgettable, and you can rest in the old fire guard\u2019s hut. The area has an old, unmaintained trail network (<a href=\"https:\/\/asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi\/karttapaikka\/?share=customMarker&amp;n=7498804.065398609&amp;e=463588.27823288064&amp;title=L%C3%A4ht%C3%B6+tunturiin&amp;desc=&amp;zoom=12&amp;layers=%5B%7B%22id%22%3A2%2C%22opacity%22%3A100%7D%5D&amp;lang=fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map<\/a>) as well as a lean\u2011to shelter and an open wilderness hut maintained by Mets\u00e4hallitus. A map, a compass, and the ability to use them are essential \u2014 with those, along with drinking water and proper gear, you can enjoy Kaarestunturi even as a weekend trekking destination. Tikkalaki can also be reached as a day trip, but the total distance there and back is about 10 kilometres. <a href=\"https:\/\/retkipaikka.fi\/unohdettu-retkikohde-keskella-lappia-monilakinen-kaarestunturi-on-jylha-pala-eramaata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span><strong>Pitti\u00f6vaara<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Pitti\u00f6vaara is a rocky hill covered in old\u2011growth forest west of Sodankyl\u00e4. From the summit you\u2019ll find beautiful long\u2011distance views; for example, Kumpu and Pyh\u00e4tunturi can be seen from different sides of the hilltop. The special feature of Pitti\u00f6vaara is its enormous gorge, and moving near it requires extreme caution.
